12

Formula: (15 / 100) × 80 = 12

How it works

Percentage calculations fall into three common tasks: finding a percentage of a number, finding what percentage one number is of another, and calculating percentage increase or decrease.

To find X% of Y, the calculator multiplies Y by (X / 100). For example, 15% of 80 is (15 / 100) * 80 = 12.

To find what percentage X is of Y, it computes (X / Y) * 100. For example, 24 out of 80 is (24 / 80) * 100 = 30%.

For percentage change, it calculates ((New - Old) / |Old|) * 100, providing both the percentage difference and the absolute change.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate a discount or tip percentage?
Use the 'What is X% of Y' tab. Enter the discount or tip percentage as X and the bill or original price as Y.
How is percentage increase calculated?
Subtract the starting number from the final number, divide by the absolute starting number, and multiply by 100.
Can percentages exceed 100%?
Yes. If a value more than doubles, the increase is greater than 100% (for example, going from 50 to 150 is a 200% increase).
